"Simon Says" Part 10

Introduction:

Last month, we encountered what could be called, "The 4th Dimension" or "the next level." This month continues in that vein, but with an added ingredient, "the mind of Christ." The highest level of mind for the believer is Jesus' example. Strangely, in Revelation, we see the world giving their mind to the beast."

Revelation 17:12-18:

12 "The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. 14 These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful."

15 Then he said to me, "The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues. 16 And the ten horns which you saw on the beast, these will hate the harlot, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire. 17 For God has put it into their hearts to fulfill His purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled.

NKJV

Single-mindedness is powerful, whether united in evil or melded by love in the church.

There are three references in 1 Peter which advocate having the mind of Christ.

Simon knew the power of being Jesus-minded, that was why he displayed such joy in Chapter One.

1 Peter 1:13:

Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 3:8-9:

8 Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; 9 not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.

1 Peter 4:1:

Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind

Armament for the mind is important for stability in a chaotic world.

Jesus said He only spoke what the Father spoke and did only what He did.

Arm yourself with those truths.

There are 47 passages from Romans to Revelation that address the "mind." Paul used simple statements with profound significance in those three postulates:

Philippians 2:5:

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus

Colossians 3:2:

Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.

Ephesians 4:23:

…be renewed in the spirit of your mind…

Having Christ's mind incorporated all He spoke and everything He did.

When He heard the disciples rebuke the "children," He rebuked the Disciples. Simon was present when Jesus called the little ones to Him and said, "Suffer the little children to come unto Me and forbid them not for such is the kingdom of heaven."

This is how Christ's mind worked and we are to have His mind. Think of the mindset that taught about the lost sheep, the lost coin, the Prodigal son. Look at Him weeping over Jerusalem, "I would have gathered you as a hen doth her brood."

That kind of mind!

He spoke kindly to the woman caught in adultery and gave a woman at the well His wisdom.

That kind of mind!

Jesus overturned tables and warned Temple leaders of their charades.

That kind of mind!

Jesus rose up and pointed to Scripture in Luke 4:18-19 and declared He had fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy.

That kind of mind!

Jesus taught from God's word openly.

Luke 4:18-19

18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,

Because He has anointed Me

To preach the gospel to the poor;

He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,

To proclaim liberty to the captives

And recovery of sight to the blind,

To set at liberty those who are oppressed;

19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."

Whether it was Zacchaeus or the woman with an issue of blood, He was aware of His surroundings and people's needs. He healed them all.

Luke 19:9-10:

9 And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."

That kind of mind!

When Simon said, "ARM yourself with His mind," it was that kind of mind.

Peter was a witness to those churches, like Bithynia, for he had been present and had seen the miracles, heard the rejoicing, felt the presence of total healing of everyone surrounding him — no one could take those experiences away from him.

Arm yourself by emulating Him as He emulated the Father.

Again, Paul joined Peter with this passage:

Ephesians 6:10-11:

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Current events are enough to warrant arming ourselves in readiness for what lies ahead (Revelation has its martyrs crying out "How long?" Hebrews 11 chronicles the suffering of the saints in its' faith hall of fame.).

Now, delve into the rest of this verse (first, the NKJV and second, the NLT).

1 Peter 4:1-2(NKJV):

…for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.

1 Peter 4:1-3 (NLT):

4 So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin. 2 You won't spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God. 3 You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy — their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols.

At this point, it would help if we could board our spiritual helicopter and rise above the world scene, while observing the "carryings on" below. We would look down on all the world with its uncontrolled madness summed up as a "flood of dissipation." (The bold type shows definitive words which fit the description.)

1 Peter 4:3-6 (NKJV)

3 For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles — when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. 4 In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you. 5 They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For this reason the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. NKJV

Let us now look at the text in the NLT.

Peter uses some heavy words to express the ways of the world. When we encounter the word "Gentile," we must translate it as "Heathen" or "Pagan."

It would seem that Simon was formatting his second epistle, as well as setting the stage for further words concerning seeking the higher walk.

The closer one walks with the world, the further away one is carried from the erudite life.

The answer to everything in life and death is Christ and His position of authority.

1 Peter 4:1-6 (NLT):

So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin. 2 You won't spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God. 3 You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy —their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols.

4 Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So, they slander you. 5 But remember that they will have to face God, who will judge everyone, both the living and the dead. 6 That is why the Good News was preached to those who are now dead — so although they were destined to die like all people, they now live forever with God in the Spirit.

Consider the previous study:

1 Peter 3:18:

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit.

1 Peter 3:21-22:

…through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.

Simon transitions to his role as elder in these next verses:

1 Peter 4:7-8:

7 But the end of all things is at hand; therefore, be serious and watchful in your prayers. 8 And above all things have fervent love for one another, for "love will cover a multitude of sins."

Because these are the last days, we can testify alongside him, "the end is at hand."

Remember "therefore" means "based on the preceding facts." We are to be serious and watchful in our prayers. (Pin-point accuracy is necessary in such a time as this.)

The apostle is setting things in order, when he begins with "above all things." The highest priority is "fervent love for one another." (In a society where the atmosphere is charged with hate and division, Simon touts "fervent love for one another."

Take a moment and examine "Fervent love"

Fervent: NT:1618 ektenes (ek-ten-ace'); from NT:1614; intent:

KJV - without ceasing, fervent.

Love: NT:26 agape (ag-ah'-pay); from NT:25; love, i.e. affection or benevolence; specially (plural) a love-feast:

(feast of) charity ([-ably]), dear, love.

According to the Bible, in the last days, there will be betrayers from many sources: neighbors, family and those with religious leadership.

Peter reaches into the heart of the matter with "love will cover a multitude of sins."

He then begins a series of directives for the church to implement.

1 Peter 4:9-10:

Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. 10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

It would seem that the love directive being ranked first would not have "be hospitable" as a sequel. However, it needed to be verbalized.

"Fervent love" evidently, did not include "stay at our house for 3 months, while you find work." Maybe one of the house churches needed a house and there were no volunteers.

The next directive extended the hospitality arena to include ministry.

Recognizing every believer received a spiritual gift, they should use it.

Churches across the world suffer from the loss of member-ministry.

One time, in preaching to a "charismatic" church, I challenged the Congregation to prove their faith — to stand and minister to each other without asking them was there a need, but by praying in the Holy Ghost and ministering in the Spirit. One third departed from the auditorium. I suppose they hadn't read I Peter.

When the modern church comes to grips with ministering to one another as a stewardship of the manifold grace of God, it will find itself in revival.

The next directive is most interesting:

1 Peter 4:11:

If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God…

Honestly, this mandate comes to mind whenever I stand to preach. There is a certain "sweep" that joins the oracle-message, giving assurance that the words being spoken come from an altar not made with man's hands. There is a sense of power that is garnered from the heavenlies — an irresistible verbiage that has healing, deliverance and love flowing with it.

O' that pulpits and pews would witness such God-Speak.

Next,

1 Peter 4:11:

…If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
NKJV

There have been times when this verse is so very relevant. Take for instance, the service in a gypsy congregation outside Brasov, Romania, where a special church dedication had an outlined program of speakers — but one, not on the program, was called to give a word, and instantly, the Spirit of the Lord fell across the congregation and there were manifestations of the glory of God that confounded the designated speakers and brought the service to a place that was unplanned but greatly blessed. Hallelujah!

Simon dredges deeper into spiritual matters, partially prophesying and partially relying on personal experience.

1 Peter 4:12-14:

Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; 13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ's sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. 14 If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified.

How to interact when experiencing persecution is most relevant today. We are seeing almost daily instances where pastors are jailed or churches are burned and congregations slaughtered. Peter is saying, "this is not a matter of IF, this is a matter of when."

The suffering of Christ is the standard of measure in this arena. Consider the physical suffering He endured and then combine that with the great spiritual gamete He wrestled with and verbalized, "why have You forsaken Me?" Being linked to Jesus causes two reactions: "On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part, He is glorified."

Go with me to Brazil and consider a large church with 1200 or more attendance which had many seminarians as members, for there is a theological school associated with it. Our focus is on the final service in a series of evangelistic meetings. I am moved by the Spirit to preach a specific message from Jeremiah 5. (A prophetess had foretold me this would bring great repentance.) It did!

With it came much consternation. People were weeping as they hugged family as relationships were healed; folks were confessing their sins openly. It looked like a melee.

What it tendered was the pastor weeping and thanking me for being used by the Spirit. He told me he knew the lifestyles of his congregation, and I had tasked everything he knew, but was frightened to confront them. However, a seminarian invited me to her home for the sole reason to tell me, "I will see to it you never speak in our churches again, because you tore our church asunder."

I told her I knew that God had mandated that message, but I would leave that for God to decide — "let Him judge between me and you…." I continued ministering in Brazil!

Persecution comes in many forms, just remember this scripture.

1 Peter 4:14:

On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part, He is glorified.

Simon surveyed persecution's many facets and said, "be glad and rejoice."

1 Peter 4:14:

If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you….

I thought it interesting, when Peter listed bed fellows which should not cause the believer to suffer rightly.

1 Peter 4:15-16:

But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people's matters. 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.

Peter closes this chapter with a strong question — one that applies to the end-time church.

1 Peter 4:17-19:

For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 Now

"If the righteous one is scarcely saved,
Where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?"

19 Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.

Throughout Scripture, there appear many similar examinations that people and nations have had to answer (a cursory reading of the prophets reveals this), but none of them are as important as this. How do you answer?

Until Next Month,

BREAKING NEWS

MISSIONS PROJECT REPORTREACH, USA:

Bro. Cavascu from Romania made us aware of a project in Moldova (the poorest country in Eastern Europe). The particulars are as follows:

1.The opportunity to purchase a former communist headquarters building surfaced.

 2. A newly formed congregation, by faith, contracted to take it.

 3. They finalized the purchase and now they need to renovate the building.

 4. $15,000 was raised and the work began.

 5. $10,000 is needed to complete the work (inflation is a problem and winter coming on is another issue).

 6. Oliver Evangelistic Association began praying for that amount.

 7. A check for $1000 came in a week ago and completed the $10,000. As of 9/16/2023, the funds went forth to "get 'er done."

 8. Through the faithfulness of our partners, we were able to bring the monies to complete a church in a village where there has not been a church.

 9. Since my 88th birthday was 9/14/23, I thank the Lord for such a gift.

The latest report from Moldova is that they are now working on the roof.

JIM'S JEWELS

From: Jim McCants

Jim's Jewels is a walk throughout Scripture with an eye toward the Promises of God. Jim McCants, at my request, took on the task of seeking out both obvious and hidden promises. Below are his promises in Ezra.

God's Promise about to be fulfilled!

Ezra 1:1-3 1 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
2 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
3 Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.

Ezra 1:6-8 6 And all they that were about them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts, and with precious things, beside all that was willingly offered.
7 Also Cyrus the king brought forth the vessels of the house of the LORD, which Nebuchadnezzar had brought forth out of Jerusalem, and had put them in the house of his gods;
8 Even those did Cyrus king of Persia bring forth by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, and numbered them unto Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah.

Total that went to Jerusalem

Ezra 2:64-65 64 The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore,
65 Beside their servants and their maids, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and there were among them two hundred singing men and singing women.

The Ancient ones remembered the GLORY and wept!

Ezra 3:12-13 12 But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice; and many shouted aloud for joy:
13 So that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people: for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard afar off.

God's Word comes forth!

Ezra 5:1-2 1 Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them.
2 Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of God helping them.

Asking the King Darius to search the records.

Ezra 5:13-17 13 But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon the same king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God.
14 And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one, whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;
15 And said unto him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in his place.
16 Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished.
17 Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king's treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.

Records found and a new decree is made!

Ezra 6:10-13 10 That they may offer sacrifices of sweet savours unto the God of heaven, and pray for the life of the king, and of his sons.
11 Also I have made a decree, that whosoever shall alter this word, let timber be pulled down from his house, and being set up, let him be hanged thereon; and let his house be made a dunghill for this.
12 And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people, that shall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem. I Darius have made a decree; let it be done with speed.
13 Then Tatnai, governor on this side the river, Shetharboznai, and their companions, according to that which Darius the king had sent, so they did speedily.

God provides everything needed!

Ezra 7:21 21 And I, even I Artaxerxes the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river, that whatsoever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done speedily,

Ezra 7:26 26 And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.

Ask and you shall receive!

Ezra 8:22-23 22 For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.
23 So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.

Ezra 8:31-32 31 Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way.
32 And we came to Jerusalem, and abode there three days.
